I have recently provided some consultancy to Colin Firth on the upcoming film The King’s Speech’ which deals in part with the terrible issues King George VI faced with a dreadful stutter and fear of public speaking. Fear of speaking in front of others is surprisingly common, and is one of the many reasons people seek voice coaching. If you find it tough, imagine how difficult it was for King George VI, who hated speaking publically and didn’t want to be King. Suddenly, with the abdication of his brother Edward, he was thrust into the limelight and had to enter the spotlight as a reluctant King and figurehead for the nation. Luckily he did have the help of a voice and speech coach, and this is where I came in with some tips about how such a coach may have worked.
